The much anticipated photos of Kirstie Kelly’s line of Disney Princess wedding gowns were finally released by Disney Consumer Products this week.
If these gowns were featured in a regular bridal catalogue, I don’t think I would make the connection to Disney Princesses. The title/labeling/brand is necessary to mak
e the transition from “wedding dress” to “Princess gown.” Once branded, though, the dresses (for the most part) succeed in evoking their inspirational characters. These dresses could exist outside of Disney, but it is the connection that gives them their appeal and allows them to sell for thousands of dollars. I can’t help thinking that more than just selling a gown, Disney is selling an idea of love, happiness, and marital bliss.

OMG I’m so disappointed! These dresses (save Belle 2) don’t even RESEMBLE most of the Princess gowns. I’m so sad! Well, at least the one I was hoping for turned out to be the best one (aka Belle 2).

I was also surprised at how literally they meant it when they said the gowns were only “inspired” by the Princesses. I guess it makes practical sense, though… who would want to wear a mermaid costume to get married? I was also forgetting that “white” would be the predominant color scheme regardless of the cut and style of the gowns, making them immediately less “Princess-y” (i.e. no pink).

It would have been nice to include a gown in each collection that more closely resembles the actual gown that each princess wears.

I know I’m late to comment, but: I realize the designer wanted to make them her own, but I Disney already converted the princess outfits to all gold – why would it be so hard to convert their outfits to white? Most of these ladies have several dresses even. Anyway, thank you for sharing!
